Saint-Florent
Saint-Florent has become a popular seaside resort over the years, but has lost none of its authenticity. This ancient Roman town boasts a prime geographical location, with air and sea links just 30 minutes away, as well as being at the gateway to the famous Agriate Desert. As a departure point for the majestic roads of Cap-Corse, Saint-Florent remains the island's must-see tourist destination.
At the entrance to Saint-Florent, the Place des Portes offers "the show" for pétanque fans in the shade of the tall trees. On the harbor side, you'll enjoy an exquisite stroll along the colorful quays to admire the beautiful boats or go shopping. As you stroll through the narrow streets of the old quarter, you'll inevitably come across the Piazza Posta, dear to the hearts of Saint Florentines and later renamed Piazza Doria. With its frog fountain and cool summer air, it's a delight for young and old alike, protected by the bell tower of the 17th-century parish church of Sainte-Anne. A little higher up, the 15th-century Citadelle, sentinel of the village, crowns the whole. Further on, 800m from the center, the remarkable 12th-century Romanesque-Pisan Cathedral of Nebbiu rounds off your visit...
There are several free parking lots in the village: one on the Citadelle esplanade, one near the stadium, one on the port and another along the banks of the Aliso. Only the central parking lot is chargeable from April to November.
The port
Situated at the foot of the imposing 15th-century Citadelle, nestled in one of the most beautiful gulfs in the Mediterranean, the port of Saint-Florent offers wind-protected anchorage for yachtsmen. Early risers can enjoy the village's few remaining fishermen, while night owls can take advantage of the lively entertainment provided by the many establishments along the quayside, enhanced by a small night market featuring local artisans.
But the most pleasant time in the harbor is undoubtedly sunset! This is the time when the larger vessels return to port, alongside the "pointus" (traditional fishing boats) and other pleasure craft. You can enjoy a drink, fish and other culinary specialities in the many restaurants located in the heart of the port.
The harbor master's office is located at the foot of Sainte-Anne church. The port offers 670 annual berths and 250 transient berths, and can accommodate boats from 4 to 48m. The many shops and services in the village are within easy walking distance of the docks.
The monuments
The citadel
Built in 1439 by Janus Campofregoso, it was one of the first positions occupied by Genoa, making it one of the island's most important trading centers. The originality of the Citadel, a jewel of military architecture, is also recognized by its original form. Offering an aesthetically pleasing panorama of the Gulf of Saint-Florent, it remains an essential stopping-off point. During the summer season, the Citadelle transforms itself into a meeting place, hosting concerts by world-renowned artists.
Nebbiu Cathedral
The ancient cathedral of the bishopric of Nebbiu was probably built on the ruins of a Paleo-Christian basilica. Dedicated to the Virgin of the Assumption, the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta probably dates from the first quarter of the 12th century. The first document mentioning the building dates back to 1144. Listed as a Monument Historique in 1840, it has undergone major restoration campaigns. The building combines the sobriety of its era with the richness of its ornamentation.
During the summer season, the commune of Saint-Florent will keep this prestigious building open to visitors. An ideal setting for sacred chants, you'll have the pleasure of hearing a variety of polyphonic concerts in the evening, introducing you to the rich diversity of our culture.
